Assignment #4 - Discussion Question
In the novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, Mariam's mother says, "Women like us. We endure. It's all we have." What examples in the book support this statement and make it true? How do Mariam and Laila endure just as Nana says?
In the novel, "A Thousand Splendid Suns", when Mariam and Laila overcame their differences, they both began a life together being married to the same man that was becoming more controlling and abusive as days, weeks, and even months pass by. Mariam and Laila endure living with no immediate family but with a man that is abusive and controlling. An example of endurance from Mariam is when she went through her pregnancy and every time she had a miscarriage, she had to endure the pain of not being able to beat a child of her own. Laila endure the pain of losing her parents to war and having no where to turn, she agrees to marry Rasheed to have shelter and food to survive because she has nowhere to go or anyone to turn to for help.
